What is United Way?

Hillsdale County United Way is a private, independant, not-for-profit organization under the leadership of a local volunteer Board of Directors.

Through its annual fundraising campaign, Hillsdale County United Way is able to provide funding for programs and services that address critical community needs to thirteen human service agencies. Ninety-eight percect of the funds remain in, or return to, Hillsdale County. More than half of the residents of Hillsdale County are touched by one or more United Way funded service each year.

Programs and Activities:

Annual fundraising campaign, to benifit 13 local partner agencies and United Way programs.

Allocation of funding to community charities and programs

Emergency Fund available to all (member and non-member) agencies in Hillsdale County, to assist families and individuals in crisis.

Founder and converner of the Hillsdale County MACES Group(Mulit-Agency Collaborative for Emergency Services), coordinating emergancy services provided by local agencies and faith-based organizations, according to needs in the community.

Active Partner in Human Servies Newtwork, involved in needs assessment and developing programs and resources to mee those needs, in collaboration with service provided countywide.

Volunteers In Action Program, designed to assist nonprofit organizations countywide in their work by providing them with volunteer resources, while offering community members opportunities to volunteer their time and talents in meaningful service to the community.

Plant-A-Row Program, working with local gardeners to grow fruit and vegatables to be distributed to local food pantries

Annual Food and Toiletry Drives in county schools for the benefits of local food pantries

Local coordinator Make-A-Difference Day, an annual nationwide initiative developed in response to Pres. Bush’s call to service, involving close to 600 individuals in Hillsdale County.

Editor and publisher of the Hillsdale County Non-Profit Agency and Service Organization Directory, in collaboration with the Hillsdale County Chamber of Commerce.

United Way Youth Board, promoting youth volunteerism and training young people to be our future community leaders.

Michigan Student Service Award Program – first statewide recognition program in the U.S. of high school students who volunteer 400 hours or more during their high school years.
